Detecting arrival of cardboard boxes on a conveyor from above while avoiding a robotic arm
Detecting the arrival of cardboard boxes on a conveyor from above
You wish to reliably detect the arrival of packages of different heights from outside a robot’s range of movement in a process in which packages are loaded by robot.
[Issue] Installation location and robotic arm
- There’s nowhere to install the sensor near the conveyor.
- When the robot is moving, the sensor detects not only packages, but the robotic arm as well.
[Solution] Use a compact, long-range HG-F1 Series Laser Distance Sensor to reliably detects only within the height of the package in Window Comparator Mode.
Use a compact, long-range HG-F1 Series Laser Distance Sensor in Window Comparator Mode to reliably detect objects only within the range of the height of packages while ignoring interruptions of the projected light by the robotic arm!
Long-distance detection
Ease of installation issues can be resolved by detecting packages from the ceiling.

Window Comparator Mode
This mode outputs a single judgment of either “pass” (if the value falls within two threshold values) or “fail” (if it doesn’t).
The threshold values can be easily set either by pressing the TEACH button or activating external input when an object you wish to detect is present. Threshold settings to avoid detecting the robotic arm using Window Comparator Mode can be easily configured from a distance.
Key considerations in choosing a sensor

Long-distance detection
Workpieces inside the robot’s range of movement can be detected from a distant location.
Easy configuration
Settings to avoid detecting the robotic arm using Window Comparator Mode can be easily configured to accommodate the actual arm.
Compact design
The sensor features a rugged, lightweight design thanks to its aluminum die-cast enclosure despite its compact form factor of 20 (W) × 44 (H) × 25 (D) mm (the same form factor as Panasonic
